1.      PURPOSE

-        Litter Records

-        Proof of ownership

-        Identification for Genetic Testing Schemes

-        Identification for NDC(A) Breed Schemes

2.      ELIGIBILITY

-        All Purebred, ANKC Registered Dobermanns bred by a member of the Dobermann Club of WA (Inc.)

3.      TATTOO SCHEME

         (a)     TATTOO CODES

                   i.   Application for Tattoo Code shall be made to the DCWA Tattoo Registrar on the prescribed Form, who shall allocate the Tattoo Code, upon receipt of the signed Application Form.

ii.  The Tattoo Code shall be the first three (3) letters of the Breeders Prefix, or if already taken the fourth letter shall replace the third and so on until a unique code is created. If this is not possible a code will be chosen by the DCWA Tattoo Registrar. No code selection can be used unless accepted and approved by the DCWA Tattoo Registrar.

In the past some breeders were allocated a four (4) letter code when there was duplication within the first three letters. This practice no longer exists, and all three letter symbols are now unique.

iii.     A Tattoo Code is issued to a Breeders Prefix and therefore is not transferable to any other Breeders Prefix.

         (b)     TATTOOING

                   i.   Puppies shall be tattooed between 7 and 8 weeks of age.

ii.  Every live puppy in the litter must be tattooed.

iii. The puppy will be tattooed in the right ear. The whole tattoo identification is to be placed in the inside of the ear, and in the centre of the ear, starting with the first letter of the code towards the tip of the ear and the numbers going down the ear towards the skull.

iv.      Only Tattoos that are formally recognised by the DCWA will be accepted as the means of positive identification for all Schemes.

                   v.  All tattooing of Dobermann's within a 200km radius of Perth must be done by authorised Tattoo Officers of the DCWA. Outside the 200km radius tattooing may be done by a veterinarian authorised by the Committee of the DCWA or the DCWA Tattoo Registrar. This must be recorded in writing on a litter-by-litter basis and in the event that problems arise with these animals in the future these vet's will no longer be authorised. A pro-forma instruction letter is to be provided to the veterinarian.

         (c)     RE-TATTOOING OF DOGS PREVIUSLY TATTOOED.

                   i.   In the event that the animal's tattoo is illegible or indistinct the dog/bitch will be tattooed in the left ear with the original number allocated to it as a puppy, and this should ideally be performed with the dog under general anaesthetic. This must be done in consultation with the Club Tattoo Registrar.

         - 'Hauptner' black or green paste, must be used.

7.      TATTOO EQUIPMENT CLEANING PROCEDURE

         Equipment required:

         - Surgical spirits or pur alcohol, available from a chemist

         - Small brush -toothbrush is ideal

         - Small glass or jar x 2

         - Washing up detergent -nothing with bleach!

         - Paper towels

-Strainer, colander (stainless steel is best, won't stain), or large bowl

         - Pair of tweezers (optional) used to pick digits out of glasses.

Before tattooing place a little detergent and warm water in the glass.

As each number is used, place it in the glass straight away. This stops the ink drying on the digits and makes cleaning easier.

Once tattooing is completed it is important that the pliers and digits are cleaned immediately. If the digits are left in the solution for any extended time they will rust.

-        Empty all the digits and letters from the pliers into the glass.

-        Place enough Surgical spirits or pure alcohol to cover all the digits into the 2nd glass.

-        Fill the sink or large bowl with warm soapy water. Empty the glass, if using a sink, into the strainer or colander and place this in the water, this will stop digits going down the drain by accident.

-        Wash and scrub the pliers in warm soapy water (then soak the pliers while you clean the digits).

-        Taking each digit in turn

         -        Using the small brush thoroughly clean, making sure all traces of ink are removed.

         -        Rinse each digit well in clean water

         -        Place in glass with Surgical spirits or pure alcohol for a minimum of 10 minutes.

-        Scrub pliers again and then rinse well in clean water. Place on paper towel to drain. Remove the digits from the Surgical spirits and place on paper towel to dry. COUNT to ensure none have been left behind.

If the digits are left in the solution for any extended time they will rust.

-        Pour the remaining Surgical spirits from the glass over the Pliers, return pliers to paper towel.

-        When the digits are dry, return to plastic bag.

-        If using the large bowl, empty this through the strainer or colander, this will stop digits left behind going down the drain by accident.
